Kopthione NA: Antifungal Biocide in Inks

What is an Ink? Ink is a liquid or paste that contains pigments or dyes and is used to colour a surface to produce an image, text, or design. Ink is used for drawing or writing with a pen, brush, or quill. Thicker inks, in paste form, are used extensively in letterpress and lithographic printing. Ink can be a complex medium, composed of solvents, pigments, dyes, resins, lubricants, solubilizers, surfactants, particulate matter, fluorescents, and other materials. The components of inks serve many purposes; the ink’s carrier, colorants, and other additives affect the flow and thickness of the ink and its dry appearance.
In a typical ink formula, the ink is composed of a colorant, resin binder, solvent, and additives. Colorants, resins, and solvents constitute about 95% of a typical ink formulation. Additives make up the balance of the ink formula. Since Ink is a water based product, there are chances that it can be contaminated with microbes (such as bacteria and fungus). So to prevent the ink from microbial contamination, products require the use of biocides to prevent growth of fungus in your water-based system. They are added to the ink formulation in very small amounts, but they are essential if you store your product for extended periods.
One of the most efficient biocide used in Ink industry is Kumar Organic’s Kopthione NA 40%. The chemical name of Kopthione NA 40% is Sodium pyrithione. It is available in Fine Particle dispersion form. It is light yellow colour solution which is freely soluble in water, with assay of 40%.
For inhibiting the growth of bacteria and fungi in inks such as aqueous based inks, printing solutions, pigment slurries or press cake, add up to 1250 ppm of this product. While the inks are in use, a concentration of 0.125% w/ w of Kopthione NA 40% is necessary. The amount of this product to be added at the time of manufacture of the ink to obtain the above concentrations, at the time of use, will vary with the shelf- life of the ink.
There is chances of bacterial contamination while we use inks in jet-printer. The growth of bacteria in slightly acidic or neutral jet-printer inks can be avoided for 4 weeks, by adding 0.75% w./w of this product at the time of manufacture. To avoid decomposition of this product during shelf- life of the ink, airtight packaging must be used.
In all cases (I.e. whether the contamination occur during manufacturing or during usage), Kopthione NA should be added to the ink at any point in the manufacturing process by just pouring from the container.
As you can see, Ink is a complex fluid which is very necessary for writing or printing. There are many chances of contamination of ink while manufacturing and usage, and contamination of ink might lead to huge loss to ink industry. Hence it is essential to use effective biocide like Kopthione NA 40% to prevent ink from contamination.
