Permanent changes in hair shape are achieved by breaking and reforming of the chemical side bonds in your hair. In this process, the disulphide bonds in the hair are broken through a process called reduction. In the reduction reaction, either oxygen is removed or hydrogen is added to existing bonds to break them. In the existing or untreated hair, the disulphide bond join one sulphur atom in the polypeptide chain to another sulphur atom on another polypeptide chain. Reducing agents are used to add hydrogen atom at each of this sulphur atoms in the disulfide bonds to break them. With these, bonds broken the polypeptide chains are ready to slip into a new shape. At this stage, the hair is either premed over the rod or straightened, depending upon treatment requirement. The broken disulphide bonds are then neutralized to remove hydrogen atoms using hydrogen peroxide.
During this process of treatment selection of reducing agent plays a very important role. The reducing agent used should be effective for hair treatment as well as should be mild and not harmful. There are several advantages to using this chemical instead of guanidine hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. The pH of ammonium thioglycolate is lower, with a pH level at about 9 to 9.5, whereas sodium hydroxide can have a pH as high as 14. The less alkaline chemical will not damage the scalp or hair. This chemical is much less damaging to the scalp and hair than others and is also much less smelly
